A DECREASE IN FOOD SECURITY

Indonesia is locked in the food trap, a situation which has been caused by developed countries and global capitalism. Seven main non-rice commodities, which are consumed by Indonesians, are imported. The last two years have seen a leap in prices for food and other agricultural produce. As a result, there has been a decrease in food security. This has had devastating consequences, such as an increase in the number of cases of malnutrition and an increase in maternal and infant mortality rates.

DEVELOPMENT FUNDING

Some time ago, I was invited to a seminar in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to share suggestions regarding development funding. All the participants, except for myself, came from Latin America. The seminar's goal was to find alternative means of development funding for Latin America. The construction of Banco del Sur (The Bank of the South) is an example of this. This funding organisation offers development assistance with conditionalities that suit developing countries better than those set out by the World Bank and IMF.

HOUSING FOR ALL

Several months ago, the government proclaimed the development of “1,000 Towers” that could be further translated into the provision of one million high-rise flats. According official estimates, the demand for housing in Indonesia has reached at least 5.5 million units and will increase annually by approximately one million units. Despite this very large demand, these official estimates do not fully reflect the realities of the housing situation. Missing from these estimates are the millions of families who are registered to have a residence, yet the condition of their housing do not meet eligibility standards. Many of these...

The phenomenon of rising neo-socialism in Latin America is a world-wide concern, which even affects Indonesia. There are generally considered to be two strains of neo-socialism in Latin America. On the one side, are the governments of Chile, Brazil and Uruguay, which have been labeled as 'pragmatic', 'rational' and 'modern'. On the other side are the governments of Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina, which are considered to be 'demagogic', 'nationalist', and 'populist'.
